Belgrade Flower Festival
a multidisciplinary project
Belgrade Flower Festival BFF
2010 - 2021
The BFF Citizens’ Association was created with the aim of raising awareness about sustainability and ecological standards.
As a city festival event held every year with the arrival of autumn, over the course of ten years the Belgrade Flower Festival (BFF) developed a distinctive working model based on public meetings and dialogue, education through play and recreation, establishing contemporary forms of participation, and piloting practical green solutions tailored to the needs of the 21st century.
By establishing an annual platform for knowledge and information exchange, presenting public and private initiatives and projects, and fostering connections and collaboration among various stakeholders, the festival became a true hub for families, friends, colleagues, and business partners.
Over ten years of continuous activity, tens of thousands of people and children took part in the festival.
Through the festival, the BFF Association also presented and promoted its own projects — some of which are featured on this page.
The projects of the BFF Association have supported and complemented one another, building a strong network dedicated to raising ecological awareness, emphasizing the importance of urban greenery, and promoting protection and sustainability.
Founders and coordinators of the BFF Association:
Marija Nikolić, Ivana Malinović, and Sabina Kerić.

Green corners
2013 - 2015
"Green corners" are modular and mobile concepts created to offer innovative, flexible, ecological and economical solutions for exterior and interior landscaping in business, public and private spaces. Each corner represents a complete greening system that includes services and products, adapting to different needs and conditions of space. Their modularity and mobility enable simple space transformation, while the application of sustainable solutions promotes ecology, functionality and aesthetics. This project served as commercial support for the project "A city tailored to the child" within the work of the UG BFC.

Child-Friendly City
2013 - 2016
Recognizing the essential importance of a healthy, green environment during childhood, along with the natural need for children to explore and engage with space on their own, became the central focus of the Serbian–Swedish collaboration within the project Child-Friendly City.
By questioning the trend of the accelerated commercialization of public spaces and its impact on growing generations, the initiative advocated for and promoted more innovative and humane approaches to urban planning — in cooperation with universities and professional communities from Serbia and Sweden.

Urban Pockets
2011-2012
The student project “Urban Pockets”, launched at the professional gathering of the 2nd Belgrade Flower Festival, was conceptually designed as an intervention in abandoned green spaces within residential units.
The BFC professional gathering brought together landscape architecture students with innovative ideas, public institutions, municipal authorities, and city administration. It was there that the concept of implementing Urban Pockets in 17 Belgrade municipalities — funded by the city — was developed.
During the creation of these green areas within residential complexes, local residents actively participated, contributing to the design and implementation of the spaces.
The BFC Citizens’ Association (UG BFC) led the project, coordinating communication between residents, students, municipalities, and public institutions responsible for implementation.

Sensory Garden
2017
The “Sensory Garden” at an elementary school for children with special needs was created to support inclusive education through a natural and stimulating environment.
The project integrates carefully selected plants, varied soil textures, fragrant shrubs, and water elements, enabling children to engage their senses of touch, smell, sight, and hearing — developing sensory abilities and learning in an interactive way.
It was realized through collaboration between the public sector, the social sector, and civic activism, establishing a model of partnership and shared responsibility.
Through joint consultations and actions, experts in education and landscape design contributed to creating a space tailored to the needs of children, while the garden itself promotes inclusivity, innovative green solutions, and social responsibility.
The “Sensory Garden” stands as an example of how interdisciplinary collaboration can enhance education, development, and child well-being — connecting the public, private, and civil sectors in a functional and inspiring practice.

ЏАК
2013 - 2021
YAK— Modular and Sustainable Planter
YAK is an innovative, modular, and easily transportable planter designed for greening both indoor and outdoor spaces.
Available in sizes ranging from small to giga format, it is made of double-layered, eco-friendly materials with a recyclable layer, suitable for local production.
Being water- and air-permeable, DŽAK balances the ratio of moisture and air, protects the roots, and ensures healthy plant growth.
Thanks to its anti-UV protection, and resistance to frost and abrasion, it performs reliably in homes, on terraces, balconies, or in gardens.
Flexible, aesthetic, and cost-effective, DŽAK provides a long-lasting and sustainable solution for modern greenery in any space — perfectly adapted to contemporary urban living.
This project served as a commercial support initiative to the project “Child-Friendly City” within the work of the BFC Association.

Community Garden Project
2011- do danas
Baštalište (Community Garden Project) is the first garden community in Serbia, where urban residents of Belgrade grow vegetables for their own needs on a plot of 18 ares, 9 km from the city center, in the Slanci neighborhood. On a plot, donated by local professional farmers, divided into smaller units of 40 m², about 30 members grow food every season according to the principles of organic production, sharing infrastructure and tools, joined together to work and enjoy their fruits. This project, which is still alive today, was launched at the Belgrade Flower Festival in 2011.
